Rebuilt Grain Store

Belfast and Dublin based architecture office BWD has replaced an old grain store damaged by a storm in 1992, with this weekend residence.

The new contemporary building, which takes the same proportions as the old structure due to planning restrictions, sits on a site of it's own, and comprises a combination of concrete, stone, steel and timber in its construction.

Allowed by planning restrictions to erect a new building with the same volume of the damaged warehouse, we developed a three-story wood and steel residence with a gable roof, built to withstand any storm weather.

The structure’s main construction comprises seven steel frames, enveloped in a timber skin of hinged and sliding panels that can change position depending on the residents’ requirements. In this way, the building can be anonymous when not in use with all the panels closed, but transform when it is being lived in.
